CBCT vs OPG: Which Dental Scan Does Your Dentist Need?

18 October 2026    Ruprela Diagnostics Team

Quick answer: An OPG is a flat, panoramic X-ray of all the teeth and both jaws, useful as an overview. A CBCT (Cone Beam CT) is a 3D scan of a chosen area, used for exact measurements, such as for implants. At Ruprela, Raipur, a Digital OPG currently costs ₹600 and CBCT starts at ₹1,200.

What is the difference between CBCT and OPG?

Both tests use X-rays to look at your teeth and jaws, but they answer different questions. Think of an OPG as a wide photograph of your whole mouth, and a CBCT as a 3D model of one part of it that the dentist can turn and slice in any direction.

When does a dentist ask for an OPG?

An OPG is often the first imaging test because it shows everything at once with a low dose. Your dentist may ask for an OPG:

  • at a first visit, to see your overall dental health;
  • to check wisdom teeth and whether they are impacted;
  • before starting braces or aligners;
  • to see how a child's permanent teeth are developing;
  • to look for bone loss from gum disease across the mouth;
  • after an injury to the jaw.

In many cases, the OPG gives enough information, and nothing more is needed.

When does a dentist ask for a CBCT instead?

CBCT is used when a flat picture cannot answer the question safely. Typical situations include:

  • Implant planning: the dentist needs to know the exact bone height and width and the distance to the nerve or sinus.
  • A wisdom tooth close to the nerve: if the OPG suggests the roots are near the nerve canal, a CBCT shows their true relationship in 3D.
  • Impacted canines or extra teeth: to see whether the tooth lies towards the cheek or the tongue, which matters for orthodontic treatment.
  • Difficult root canal cases: to find extra canals, cracks or infection that a flat X-ray does not show.
  • Cysts and jaw lesions: to understand their exact size and the bone around them.

Why do some patients need both?

It is common for a dentist to start with an OPG to see the whole mouth, then ask for a CBCT of one area that needs more detail. For example, an OPG may show an impacted wisdom tooth, and a CBCT then shows exactly how close its roots are to the nerve. This step-by-step approach keeps radiation as low as reasonably possible while giving the dentist the information they need.

At Ruprela, CBCT is done on the Carestream CS 8200 Neo Edition and reported by Dr. Neha Patil (BDS, MDS – Oral). Both tests are available at the same centre, so if your dentist asks for both, you can usually plan them in a single visit.

How do I prepare for either scan?

No fasting is needed. Remove earrings, nose pins, necklaces, hairpins, spectacles and removable dentures before the scan. Bring your dentist's prescription, and tell the staff if you are pregnant or could be pregnant.

Where can patients in Raipur and Chhattisgarh get OPG and CBCT?

Ruprela X-Ray & Advanced Diagnostic Centre, serving Raipur since 1982, is at Amrit Sandesh Complex, Great Eastern Road, beside Bajrang Mandir, Shastri Chowk. Dentists in Pandri, Shankar Nagar, Telibandha and Naya Raipur refer patients here, and many patients travel from Bilaspur, Durg, Bhilai, Korba and Rajnandgaon for implant planning. Having both OPG and CBCT under one roof saves outstation patients an extra trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CBCT better than OPG?

Not always. CBCT gives more detail, but an OPG is often enough and uses a lower dose. The right test is the one that answers your dentist's question.

Can I ask for a CBCT directly without an OPG?

The choice of test should come from your dentist, who knows what information is needed. Please bring their prescription when you book.

Which is cheaper, OPG or CBCT?

At Ruprela, a Digital OPG currently costs ₹600, and a CBCT scan starts at ₹1,200, depending on the area to be scanned.

Are both scans painless?

Yes. You bite gently on a holder and stay still while the machine moves around your head. There are no injections.

Can children have these scans?

Yes, when the dentist advises it. OPG is commonly used for children, and CBCT is used when specific 3D detail is needed.
