USG Anomaly Scan in Raipur: What It Checks, Timing and Price

14 September 2026    Ruprela Diagnostics Team

Quick answer: A USG anomaly scan is a detailed pregnancy ultrasound that checks the baby's organs, growth, the placenta and amniotic fluid. It is commonly done in the second trimester, often around 18 to 22 weeks, but the exact timing is decided by your obstetrician. At Ruprela in Raipur, the current price is ₹2,600.

What is an anomaly scan?

An anomaly scan is a detailed ultrasound examination done during pregnancy. "Anomaly" means something that is different from the usual. The aim of the scan is to look carefully at how the baby is developing and to identify certain structural problems, if present, so that your doctor can plan care for you and your baby.

Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation. It has been used in pregnancy for decades and is considered safe when done for a medical reason by trained professionals. At Ruprela, sonography is performed personally by radiologists.

What does the anomaly scan check?

During the scan, the radiologist systematically looks at the baby from head to toe. This usually includes:

  • Head and brain: shape and main structures.
  • Face: including the lips, where visible.
  • Spine: along its full length.
  • Heart: its position, size and main structures that can be seen on the scan.
  • Abdomen: stomach, kidneys, bladder and the abdominal wall.
  • Arms and legs: the bones and limbs, where visible.
  • Growth: measurements of the head, abdomen and thigh bone to check the baby's size.
  • Placenta and fluid: the position of the placenta and the amount of amniotic fluid.

It is important to know that no ultrasound can detect every condition. Some problems are not visible on a scan, and the view can be limited by the baby's position or by the mother's body. If anything needs a closer look, your obstetrician will guide you on the next steps.

When is the anomaly scan done?

The anomaly scan is commonly done in the second trimester, often around 18 to 22 weeks of pregnancy, when the baby's organs are large enough to be seen clearly. However, the exact week is decided by your obstetrician based on your pregnancy. Please follow the timing your doctor advises and book a little in advance so the scan happens within that window.

Timing matters because a scan done too early may not show some structures clearly, while a scan done much later can be harder to complete because the baby has less room to move and the views can be limited. If you have missed the date your doctor suggested, speak to your obstetrician about what to do next rather than skipping the scan.

Usually a full bladder is not needed at this stage of pregnancy. Our team will tell you if any preparation is required when you book.

It is a detailed scan and can take longer than a routine ultrasound. If the baby is not in a good position, you may be asked to walk a little or come back for a few views.

No. Sex determination is illegal under the PC-PNDT Act and is never done at Ruprela.

What should I carry for the anomaly scan?
