About This Service

DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) measures bone mineral density with extremely low radiation — it is the gold-standard test for diagnosing osteoporosis and predicting fracture risk before a fracture ever happens.

Osteoporosis is a silent disease: bones weaken for years without any symptom until a minor fall causes a major fracture. Post-menopausal women lose bone rapidly, and men over 65 are also at significant risk.

The test is quick, painless and non-invasive — you simply lie on a table while the scanner passes over your spine and hip. Results are given as a T-score your doctor uses to plan treatment.

How to Prepare

• No fasting required.
• Do not take calcium supplements for 24 hours before the scan.
• Avoid clothing with metal zips/buttons around the waist and hips.
• Inform us if you had a barium study or contrast scan in the past week.
